Inside a Suffolk Wiretap

Throughout most of 2007, day and night, the Suffolk County district attorney’s Government Corruption Bureau eavesdropped on a politically connected attorney’s wiretapped phone.

Inside a Suffolk Wiretap: Uncovering Corruption in the District Attorney’s Office

In 2007, Suffolk County’s Government Corruption Bureau launched a wiretap operation targeting attorney Robert Macedonio, following reports of misconduct involving then-prosecutor John Scott Prudenti. The surveillance revealed phone calls and communications suggesting possible drug trafficking, bribery, money laundering, and influence peddling across local government offices.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of District Attorney Thomas Spota, Chief Assistant District Attorney Christopher McPartland, and Chief of Detectives James Burke, all of whom would later face federal indictments and convictions tied to a separate corruption scandal. The evidence obtained from the wiretap included conversations with elected officials, judges, and political figures, yet the original investigation did not lead to any immediate prosecutions.

Years later, the full extent of corruption within the DA’s office came to light when Spota and McPartland were convicted in federal court for witness tampering and obstruction of justice, following their efforts to conceal the assault of a prisoner by James Burke. According to Newsday and NBC New York, their downfall highlighted the pervasive abuse of power and lack of oversight within one of New York’s largest prosecutorial offices.

As part of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Special Investigations Bureau, the coordinated wiretap and surveillance campaign demonstrated the value of lawful electronic interception in exposing systemic misconduct. While the evidence gathered against Macedonio and others did not result in formal charges at the time, it became a pivotal chapter in a much broader saga of corruption and accountability in Suffolk County.
